The Social Media World of Personal Finance
Apr 15, 2022Since the pandemic, more people have turned to social media than ever to stay connected with others, and to conveniently get news and information. This has given rise to many new sources of information to promote various topics of personal finance. Unfortunately, the mass majority are more harmful, in my opinion, than actually being helpful. Here are the three top reasons why:
- Personal Finance, as a topic, is centered around investing or success stories, especially about picking hot stocks, crypto, etc that will make you a millionaire, and that will solve all your financial troubles & worries. The topic of investing and risk taking has been sensationalized for entertainment purposes, but people need to understand, THIS is NOT a common reality.
- Anyone, and especially those with enough followers, will turn themselves into experts and make all sorts of claims to establish their brand for monetizing purposes. They can say whatever they want, with entertaining aspects being their focus, rather than being correct and truly educational. Their channels/platforms are often created with an ulterior motive, because if it's based on an educational focus, like what I do, there should be ZERO sponsors, affiliated marketing, promoting of their own products/services or products/services of others to make money, etc
- Too much bad and misinformation are out there which naturally drown out all the good and pure educational information available. There are great free and primary resources out there to teach you and provide with you great tools to learn and manage your finances but they are not being found easily. Why? It’s because the “bad and misinformation” platforms know how to position their information to be easier to search and/or they can advertise their platform to be on your top searches. In away, they have the finances to outcompete the genuine educational channels.
With just these three points, it’s obvious why many people are both overwhelmed and confused about the topic of personal finance and do not have a clear handle of their finances.
